Ahna Serendren was born and raised in Southern California. She holds a BA in English literature and creative writing from UCLA, a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA in combined media from Hunter College in New York City. Color, compounded layers and collage-like compositions play a central role in Ahna’s painting practice. Her paintings often include everyday materials such as caulk, carpet, broom bristles and other scraps. Buried beneath layers of paint, these mundane materials become otherly, asking the viewer to slow down in order to take in their mottled, mysterious surfaces.
Selected exhibitions of Ahna’s work include Inside/Outside Upside/Down at Maldonado Projects in New York City, Rare Humdrum at Idio Gallery in Brooklyn, We Play So Hard at Being Human, featured on Curating Contemporary and A Seeing Thing, at Will Brown Gallery in San Francisco, California.
